Fit Muslins

Thursday afternoon brings us back to Portland Garment Factory to adjust our most challanging piece, the signature bomber. After a fit meeting with the pattern maker, and a final decision on ribbing, the jacket is close to perfection.

The hum of sewing machines and sergers warm the open warehouse while interns and assistants catagorize fabrics and notions.

This is crunch time and things are falling into place. It’s exciting to see all the stress, long nights and hard decisions pay off and have the opportunity to work with great local contractors. We are loving the hands on approach they foster and the level of enthusiasm they bring to the table.

L.A. Fabric Sourcing

Downtown

With our sample deadlines quickly approaching and only a handful of the collections’ fabric found locally, we decided to take a last-minute jaunt down to the textile capital of the west coast, L.A.

Sample Yardage

I drove down on Tuesday and scoped out the fashion district Wednesday, picking up a few pre-ordered fabrics. When Rachel flew in Thursday morning we hit the streets, spreadsheet and color board in hand, with purpose.

Our first stop was a dye house in Gardena. The owner was very informative and happy to help a new label with custom colors. After looking at their dyed fabric samples we were thrilled to find the exact dusty teal and red we’d been dreaming of! Perfect fabric, perfect color, totally re-orderable. Major score.

Dye House

Next we walked for hours through the downtown fashion district learning the ways of negotiation a.k.a. haggling. By Thursday evening we had scrambled up a steep learning curve and gathered a few more fabrics. We had only one more day to complete our mission, which included sourcing the leather for our EOJ signature bomber jacket.

Friday morning brought coffee and anxious energy. We were fast, decided and not afraid to push the bounds of typical sample fabric sourcing. It all paid off at the end of the day when we found our supple, buttery, dark brown mahogany leather at an excellent price. Exhausted but enthused we were able to spend the evenings and Saturday visiting friends and family and enjoying a warm sunset in Laguna Beach.

Lovely EndingOne 16 hour car drive later, we are now back in Portland, just weeks away from seeing our finished sales samples complete. We are working tirelessly to finish the development side of this collection and push through the marketing tasks as well.

To all who have supported Eighth of Judah, thank you. This collection would not become a reality without you.

Thank you friends and family that became backers for Eighth of Judah’s debut collection through kickstarter. Your pledges added up to a generous $4,155. However, we were not able to hit our goal of $10,000 before the deadline and recieve any funds. If everyone that previously supported us during the kickstarter project, would continue to back us via paypal, we would be able to get the entire collection through pattern making! We have a meeting this Thursday with our manufacturer. This is a huge step.

We would like to invite you to transfer your donation from kickstarter to paypal. It’s fast and easy, and you don’t have to set up an account if using a debit or credit card. Once kickstarter has released the hold on your funds you can click the “make a donation” button at the bottom of this post to transfer your pledge.

Please take the time to do this if you pledged and would still like to see us use the funds raised for this project! Thanks so much for your support of Eighth of Judah! Also, be sure to put your email address or phone number in a message to us when you donate so we can stay connected with you and thank you with a reward.

Sincerely,
Joy & Rachel

Press, images and more

We had our first press article published about Eighth of Judah last Saturday in a Southern Oregon paper! Look under the “Press” tab on the right side of the blog for the whole story.

A new front photo is now up on our kickstrarter profile (the one shown in this post) and we are working hard to make our funding goal in the remaining 9 days we have left. Please tell a friend about our project and join us as we launch this new venture.
